huge oak monolith after storm damage.

following some heavy rain and wind one of our clients called upon us to make safe of an damaged oak that had shed part of its crown on to a storage trailer and was hung up at the main crown union at about 12m. Our team attended site to make safe and bring the shed section of crown to the ground and assessed the trees condition.

we cleared branches to release the trailer from damage and attached a pull line in an advantageous position to release the hung up section. we release and removed limbs that would impede or influence the direction of the section under pull we safely dislodge the section and proceeded by clearing the arising.

On inspection the main union comprised of 3 stems originally having lost 1 third of it’s crown the union had also lost about a third of its mass. It also had a open crack separating the remaining two stems, the tree stood 30-35m in height with a vast spread, we worked on to stabling weighted section leaning toward and over a storage building while we reported our findings with some options to the client for review. later the decision was made due to the extent of damage at the union and shear weight o the specimen that the oak will be reduces to a monolith to safe guard use of the area around it and it occupants.

we then took on the operation of sectioning down the remainder of the crown making use of a 25m M.E.W.P using our two unimog’s with front mount chippers and tracked loader to deal with the large sections once on the ground to keep the site safe and free of obstacle, stem wood was stacked in allocated piles for processing on site. our tracked loader came in to its own when recovering sections of the tree that inevitably came to rest in the hundreds of tones of dung and soil under canopy . this may have contributed to sear size of the specimen. Our team carried out the work to our clients specification leaving a the site safe and tidy.
